Methamphetamine’s, or meth, addiction is on the rise in the United States.

National Survey on Drug Use and Health surveys indicate that 1.2 million Americas, or more, over the age of 12 have tried or abused meth. Meth has been around for a while, and may be the product of past military use to keep soldiers awake and ready for combat. The drug works on the central nervous system and has an amazing stimulating effect. For some, meth use can become habit forming overnight.

A meth addiction can be nothing short of deadly. Arizona rehab treatment centers for meth addiction offer special programs to treat meth addiction. First, the addiction is treated, then patients begin to learn the causes of how the chemical works on their mind and body. Beyond detox, rehab teaches patients to identify the behaviors and symptoms that result from a meth addiction. Rehab teaches patients how to deal with stress and other triggers that can stimulate meth abuse.

Detox

The first, and most critical, stage of rehab is detox. Detox removes harmful meth toxins from the patient’s body. Detox may take up to a month or longer, but the goal is for the patient to fully detox and regain mental and physical rebalance before the next phase of rehab can begin. Detox can be painful, even deadly, if the right type of medications and clinical supervision are not administered. Withdrawal symptoms may include rotting teeth, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, weight loss, and hallucinations. Some addicts report feeling sensation of insects crawling under their skin. Meth addiction is certainly a serious addiction, and the sooner the addict can get into rehab, the better their chances of realizing a full recovery.

Inpatient or Outpatient Treatment?

Upon acceptance into a rehab program, doctors and other clinicians conduct thorough assessments of the patients mental and physical condition. The meth addiction can be treated with relative ease. The critical component is identifying and treating any hidden mental disorders that can cause future relapse. Such mental disorders include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, or mood swings. These conditions are treatable. However, it is unfortunate that many patients still undergo rehab without having their mental disorders addressed.

Inpatient treatments require patients to stay at their rehab center until rehab is completed. Their length of time depends on the severity of their addiction, amount of time addicted, and their relative state of health. Rehab programs generally fall into one of three categories: 30-day, 60-day, or 90-day. However, rehab is generally administered with the idea of healing the patient, regardless of the time it takes.

Outpatient treatments are just as effective, and let patients return home at the end of their daily rehab sessions. Patients have access to qualified clinicians, effective medications, and relevant counseling and therapy—just like those offered through an inpatient program. Patients are expected to take their program quite seriously, since they are exposed rather quickly to many of the temptations that caused their addiction in the first place.

Counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy are worth their weight in gold when it comes to helping patients pursue sobriety. Patients learn how their thoughts and actions are connected—and they ultimately determine where the individual ends up in life.
