Any addiction is serious, but a heroin addiction takes the challenge to another level.

Heroin commands both a physical and psychological grip on its users. Many Arizona heroin users want to quit, but are actually intimidated into avoiding painful withdrawal symptoms. Their mind’s chemistry has been altered, and their body craves the highs and euphoric feelings that heroin provides. Many, hooked on heroin, started out abusing pain killers. The only sensible, and safe solution, for heroin addicts is to seek professional help that involves therapies, medications, complete lifestyle changes, and support groups where involvement may last a lifetime.

Taking the First Step – Detox

Heroin is a completely addictive drug, and users can become hooked on the first use. Whether through a person decision, or a court order, detox and rehab is a sure way to get one’s addiction under control. Withdrawal is usually painful, and can last for several weeks. During detox, doctors prescribe medications that can help ease the pain and discomfort. This allows one’s body to slowly readjust and regain its former balance. Patients are placed in either an inpatient or outpatient program. Initially, inpatient treatment tends to be more effective for patients looking to stabilize. Medications and support is administered around-the-clock.

Inpatient Treatment

Having navigated detox, patients continue to start their days in a healthy manner with eating or exercising while in rehab. Therapy follows, and allows patients to work with counselors to better understand the causes and consequences of their addiction. Therapy is an important element for unmasking the underlying behaviors that may have led to heroin abuse.
No two addictions are the same, and therefore there are no two treatment applications that will be administered in quite the same way. The best clinical approach is to design treatment plans that are tailored for the patient’s needs. The initial clinical assessment takes into consider the patient’s heroin addiction, along with any underlying mental disorders like anxiety, depression, or mood swings. Without treatment for these conditions, a patient’s chances for relapse greatly increase.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment is just as effective. The main difference is that it allows patients to return home at the end of their daily rehab session. Since patients return home to a familiar environment, they are admonished to follow their doctor’s orders to the letter, and to attend counseling sessions religiously. Individuals undergoing inpatient treatments are removed from the temptations that may have caused their addiction in the first place. Treatment provided in a safe, clinical environment is the safest way to treat a heroin addiction. Attempting to detox alone is never recommended because withdrawal symptoms can cause deadly harm.

Treatment Medications may include the following:

• Methadone – Can be used to treat heroin addiction symptoms, but can potentially be addictive itself. Medical oversight is required.

• Buprenorphine – An opioid, it interacts with the same receptors as heroin. It addresses heroin cravings and withdrawals.

• Naltrexone – Blocks opioid receptors, and helps to reduce cravings for the drug.

• Suboxone – Inhibits the effects of heroin and is a combination of naltrexone and buprenorphine.

Of course, each addiction centers approaches the patient’s rehab treatments on a unique basis. When there is an addiction, the best results occur when patients seek immediate treatment.
